The Daily Dope: Banksy's Pier Pressure

"Catfish" Trailer

Here is another movie set in the slowly blossoming 'social network' genre. But no need to write it off as that just yet. It starts of with guy meeting girl on facebook. Guy and girl get close. This moves on to telephone calls and meeting the girl's family through facebook as well. Eventually guy feels comfortable enough to give girl a surprise visit. And that's where it all goes wrong/creepy. This movie really looks like it's one to watch. It's been hailed as "the best Hitchcock film Hitchcock never directed" by the Financial Times. I don't know about you but I'm excited. Oh and by the way, it really happened?

Darren Arronofsky's Black Swan Trailer

Darren Arronofsky has surprised with every single of his four features particularly with Requiem for A Dream and The Wrestler. Black Swan so far is surrounded by too much mystery in the advertising campaign though, being described as a superrnatural-thriller set in the world of ballet. Resembling Splice's don't reveal all from the start trailer campaign the new trailer features the first glimpse of the super-natural part as Natalie Portman appears slightly transformed at the end of the trailer with red eyes and feathers floating around her. Is this Arronofsky going Croenenberg, Lynch or just Splice? Time and the new trailer will tell-maybe.

Pelican Blood trailer

Still without a UK release date, Pelican Blood was one of the revelations at the Edinburgh Film Festival. It proves that Brits can still do exciting films without mourning the state of council estates and without re-cycling Guy Ritchie's neo-cockney gangster films. The film is about bird-watching, suicide, that one chick (abundance of bird analogies-I know) that nearly destroys you, finding your way in life and how vegetarians are mental (my own personal conclusion). This is a cult classic in the making. Great soundtrack with music from Crystal Castles and the Do.

Ravenous Remake: Let Me In

THE ORIGINAL Let The Right One In THE RAVENOUS REMAKE Let Me In In this first installment of Ravenous Remake we recommend you see the Swedish Original before the Hollywood plastic epic remake ruins it for you or before friends come to you saying its the best thing they have ever seen after the 3d space smurf movie. It's the story of a kid who befriends the girl next door who turns out to be a vampire. The Swedish original is eerie, touching and broke new grounds in the sub-genre of vampire films, the film being much more than the usual gore and neck bite-fest vampire flicks usually are. The American one will make the snow-plough a fashion item, give Chloe Morritz a star-vehicle and pay off starving hardcore bands. Even the title change suggests that Hollywood wants YOU to chew your brains in the multiplex.

Words of Wisdom: Henry Rollins' Letter to Woody Allen

Ex-Black Flag frontman and madly funny social-themed stand-up comedian Henry Rollins writes to his favorite filmmaker in this segment of the eponymous Henry Rollins Show. He uses Woody Allen just as a starting point for an insightful rant on independent film-making, the gratuitous usage of explosions and why the multiplex's days are numbered. He confirms the age old dictum that cool guys never look at explosions, not even while in the cinema

Spastic Wobbles

I DARE YOU NOT TO SMILE WHEN THE BASS DROPS. Personally I find this too hilarious. Sounds like an elephant having diarrheal seizures. The slaughtering of Ellie Goulding's melodic voice just makes this song more ironic. Either the worst or weirdest dubstep song out there. Take your pick.

The Daily Dope: Human Sandwich

Don't Be A Drag

Witch-house. Where do I even begin to explain. This sub-genre emerged sometime in 2009 and since then has exploded in the underground electronic music scene. A year later, and we see that the genre's pioneers have emerged from myspace and are at the forefront of releasing debut albums. The best way to describe this type of music? Pretentious, cynical and avant-garde. A glorification of the occult; death, horror, terror and destruction are all part of its devilish moniker. This playlist will be perfect for any sacrificial rituals you will be attending or if you just want to dress in black and sit in a corner and be all goth.
"Enjoy it while it lasts, though. Witch House is part of an obnoxious cycle of musical evolution that phases out ideas in a matter of months. This time next year post-Witch House will be all the rage." - Cinema Suicide

OZ Attacks!- Red Hill Trailer

Following the post on Animal Kingdom, here's another taste of the new wave of crime-thrillers from down-under. Red Hill is an ultimate gender-bender and blender: part neo-western, part crime-thriller, part social commentary with vicious moments of horror. A sensation at the Berlin and Edinburgh Film Festivals, It's the story of young constable Shane Cooper and his first day at work in small and highly conservative Australian town. When an Aboriginal murderer escapes, it triggers panic amongst the locals as he seeks revenge on those who put him in jail. But, as in every excellent crime-thriller, nothing is what it seems, corruption runs deep and twists keep coming . This new wave of Aussie films have a very revisionist character and goes deep into the hidden issues of Australian past and society. Nevertheless, he viewer is spared of preaching and sermons instead being treated to a great genre spectacle. For all of you who fought the Jonah Hex film would be the revival of westerns, forget about it and look this one up instead. The apparent villain even has a better facial scar game and is so brutal that he makes No Country for Old Men's Anton Chigurgh look like a Bible salesman.

Sentences: The Life of M.F. Grimm

This is probably the fist post on the comic-book medium I think and what better way to start than with this cult hip-hop culture inspired graphic novel written by famed underground MC and producer MF Grimm. Here he uses his real name as his pen-name: Percy Carey. The graphic novel follows different moments in Grimm's life: from his rise to fame on the New York MC Battle circuit in the late 80's, his encounters with legendary figures such as Suge Knight and 2Pac to his bust on charge of drug-dealing while he was producing MF Doom's 1997 classic Operation Doomsday. With great graphics from Ron WImberley, this book delivers realism, compelling storytelling and a behind-the-scenes look at hiphop culture that,I'm sorry to say, no film or self-indulgent half-assed rapper autobiography has managed to before.

OZ Attacks!- Animal Kingdom Trailer

A series of Australian film are making a hell of a buzz this year, on the festival circuit as well as the film blog realm. If in the previous years there was a wave of spine-chillers from New Zeeland and Australia now film-makers from down-under have embraced a genre they haven't been renowned from: the crime-thriller. Animal Kingdom impressed at Cannes Film Market, was appreciated at Sundance and looks like it will get a fall release in the US. Plot: born in a family of criminals, the main character is forced to make a choice between being loyal to the family and go to prison or rat on his own brothers, with the promise of a crime-free life. The Darwinistic words of wisdom from Guy Pierce's character make me believe this a Scorsese-scale gem in the making. Weak point: the trailer has a touch of the cheesy through it's use of Air Supply's soap-fest 'All Out of Love' but hey, the world has run out of epic rock anthems to feature in trailers maybe.

FAILE Temple

Faile's latest project is nothing less than a majestic, ruined temple on Praça dos Restauradores Square in Lisbon, Portugal. Blended with reliefs and mosaics based on their more commonly wheatpasted prints, the temple also features a Scuba Horse sculpture made in collaboration with Charlie Becker. The contrast between the washed out tiles and contemporary statements is striking to say the least, and definitely deserves to last a lot longer than the brief one month period of the Portugal Arte 10 (16 July - 15 August). See more beautiful photos of the piece here.

Raw Stiles - Raw Material Vol. 2

Side A by Raw Stiles Raw Stiles has an impeccable feel for instrumentals, be it soothing, mellow interludes or flowing hip hop beats. Kanye West - "Power"

Kanye finally releases a video for his single 'Power' which is a breathtaking neoclassical video tableau by Marco Brambilla who is famous for his epic video installations. This particular one looks like it was inspired by the frescoes done by Michelangelo in the Sistine Chapel but shows "an empire on the brink of collapse from its own excess, decadence and corruption." I also urge you to check out Marco Brambilla's other work which includes puts just as much attention to detail as this piece. 'Civilization' for example is another video tableau 'that illustrates a contemporary, satirical take on the concepts of eternal punishment and celestial reward.' Something like a modern take on Hieronymus Bosch.

Short Film-Fallen Art

Since Baginski was mentioned in the Goon trailer post, it was about time that he got featured with one of his animated shorts. Polish 3d animator Tomek Baginski has been a cult hit since his first short Katedral which, legend has it (legend being passed by cough syrup addicted ginger gnomes on grey toilet paper rolls), took 7 years to make on an old Atari graphic station. Fallen Art is in this blogger's axiomaticaly proven infallible opinion (pretend that's funny) his best work. Music provided by Fanfara Ciocarlia.

Goon Trailer

The trailer for comic book adaption Goon just premiered at the holiest of holy geek meetings, Sand Diego ComicCon. It does look like about the edgiest, sickest and most violent thing done in 3D feature animation yet (Tomek Baginski is another record breaker in this niche), so far dominated by toddler enchanters (I know- weird term). Eric Powell's Goon comic book series is a cult favourite blending genres such as crime, noir and zombie with the title character looking like a Hulk-ified prohibition era bootlegger. As far as I can tell from the trailer the black humour and the graphics are true to the source material.

Actress - Splazsh [2010]

Actress, from London, is an artist to look out for. His music is experimental, lo-fi, and spacey, and Pitchfork has this to say about 'Splazsh', his second album; 'The slow-motion speed lets Actress throw in an array of sounds he'll sort through in time: woozy ambient waves, dry drums, crazy lasers, a slow synth arpeggio that sounds lifted from some old grainy sci-fi movie.' Enjoy your ride with these smooth basslines. DOWNLOAD
