Mullet Mix 008 - Milo Mills

The latest Mullet Mix is by our man Milo Mills. Here’s what you need to know to get familiar. He’s a Vienna based multi-instrumentalist who has transitioned from playing music to the world of production. And it is this foundation that shines through in his output to date. Milo has taken on an autodidactic approach towards mastering new instruments one after another. If you’re stat-centric here’s a list: Drums? Check. Guitar? Sorted. Bass? You already know. And to round it up, throw in a little bit of piano that always comes in handy when producing.

Milo has been around from playing in a few bands to producing for a number of local artists. However, the turning point came in 2009. Inspired by the greatness of J Dilla and Pete Rock to name a few; his own production began to pack on more heat. And now after exploring a number of genres and styles, he’s found comfort in avoiding being pigeon-holed in one genre.

“I cannot limit myself to one genre only”, he says referring to his keen interest in all music and his passion to create music that draws on various influences that is appreciated by a broad spectrum of listeners. Milo’s production is constantly evolving and inspired by trends of the electronic music culture, yet touched with his unique style and influence.

After his successful remix of Janet Jackson’s: Rock With You, we were really excited to see what he is currently working on. His exclusive Mullet Mix consists mainly of “untitled/unreleased” tracks by the man himself. It’s a real treat to be able to have a taster of what may come out in the near future.



Hey Milo, for those that don’t know you, can you introduce yourself?
I am a young multi-genre producer from Vienna, Austria currently signed at Singapore-based indie label Darker than Wax

What do you want for Christmas?
I would like to have 26” rims for my Benzo.

What are your favorite Viennese acts?
My favorite producers from Vienna are salute and Mez. They are on some next level shit!

What 2 songs have been on rotation the most this week?
The new Childish Gambino tracks: Telegraphic Ave and 3005 are on heavy rotation at the moment!

What are you eating for dinner tonight?
Maybe some good home-cooked meal by my lovely wifey.

Any upcoming releases/collaborations?
Currently I’m working on my next EP. It’s going to be quite different from my latest release Paradise Soon. Also, I did a tune with 2008’s RedBull BeatSuite guest Amin Payne which will be released on one of his EPs soon.

You used to do vocals too, right?
Yeah, I used to do vocals; two of the tracks got played out on local radio for a couple of weeks, but at the moment I’m focusing on my production.

Hey Embryo, tell us something about yourself for the people that are yet to get familiar with you and your music?
Hey boy. Let me introduce myself then. My real name is David Varchola, I am 24yrs old, from Slovakia. Shoe size 44-45 and my girl still loves me.

What inspired you to start your own label and what are the biggest lessons you've learned that you wish somebody would have told you before you got started?
I think it was the will to release music from artists I liked (and still like) at that moment and I'm proud that I have 7 releases from 8 producers now. A lesson? If you want it right, you have to do it yourself.

What labels are you currently looking out for? Is there anyone you would like to collaborate with in the future? 
Labels I like, right? Needwant, Strictly Rhythm, Exploited, Deep Down, Bassline US, No More Noise, Ecstasy, Kerri Chandler's Madhouse, 124 Recordings and 15% of Defected releases. House luv!
I would like to collaborate with a woman with an erotic house voice.

Coming from Europe, you must have been exposed to a lot of eurodance music in the 90's. If you could bring back one group/track from back in the days which one would it be? 
Hard question. Every 90's R&S records artist/band.

If you weren't making music what would your perfect day consist of?
Girlfriend lying in bed with my upcoming debut LP. Isn't it romantic?

Our mix series "Selective Hearing" is now called Mullet Mix and we're now at number six! With a lot of the (good) mixes coming through our speakers lately, being filled with the latest trap and footwork releases, it's always a welcome change to dial it back a notch to something more laid back every now and again. Mullet Mix 005: Ticklish

Mulet Mix is back, and this time we'll be exercising our feet with a juke mix by Ticklish. Those following the blog may have gotten familiar with this guy already. But why not start with some introductions...

Surprisingly, Ticklish is based miles away from the epicentre of the juke/footwork scene in Berlin, Germany. This obviously has not affected the quality of his output, as he has been getting nods of approvals from his peers; Machinedrum, Addison Groove and Slick Shoota to name a few. Ticklish draws influences from rap, RnB and Jazz, which are seamlessly incorporated into his tracks. The end-result is a fresh, melodic and playful take on your typical footwork/juke bangers that you have come to enjoy. Let the mix (and the short interview below) introduce you to the man behind the mask better. Also make sure to check out and then proceed to buy Ticklish's debut EP titled 'Miscom'(released by Loosesquares) that he just recently released.

Hey Ticklish, could you tell us a bit about yourself and your music? 
As you may have noticed, I want to keep my person and my face out of the public when it comes to this project. But on the other hand the music I'm making here represents me as a person better than every project before. I was never able to express myself more freely.

Juke/footwork seems to have become more popular over the past year, especially in the European scene. Have you produced other music styles in the past? How did you get into juke and what were your main influences? 
I produced music for the club in my other project for some years, but I felt it was all very limited and often generic when it comes to express emotions and states of mind. And the beats were too simple! (Laughs) I guess the key point was when I listened to Machinedrum's "Room(s)", instant fascination about what was possible to express in such a complex rhythmic structure. Other than that I have more influences outside the juke genre I guess: 90s and early 2000s r'n'b and rap, jazz and even some punk music.

Curry Wurst. Believe the hype? If yes, where to go? 
Definitely a must try, I'm a sucker for the spicy, hot ones! the only one I tried in Berlin yet is Curry 66 at Grünberger straße. Real tasty though!

What are your future plans after your debut EP? You recently played at a show together with Dj PayPal. You two seem to share a similar style when it comes to footwork. Could there be a collaboration in the making? 
Paypal's the best! We kinda share the same thoughts about the production process. We're not working on something specific yet, but who knows what might come. At the moment, I'm really happy about the reception of the Miscom EP and I'm writing new material already. I'd love to play live shows and meet some interesting people. We'll see what future will bring, I'm really thankful for what happened so far already!

Mullet Mix 004: G.S One

In our latest edition of Mullet Mix we've got G.S.One coming through with a massive selection of his favourite tracks. If you don't know, G.S. One is one of the latest rising stars of Manchester's music scene and is part of the up and coming label BPM Music (Big People Music) that's been supplying the Manchester and UK scene with some huge nights through their roster of talented DJs and Producers.Their latest show in front of a home crowd at Red Rum in Manchester last weekend had the whole BPM crew showcasing their talents. BPM's First Lady Madam X describes G.S. One's distinctive style as what it would sound like 'if R. Kelly did Bass Music' which is quite an accurate description really. G.S. One's debut single 'Pillow Talk' has already been getting a lot of heavy rotation and is a definite dancefloor heater. We hope that you enjoy his exclusive mix for afromullets as much as we did! For the people that don't know, please tell us something about yourself and your music?
Cool, I’m G.S.ONE, I’m based in Manchester and I guess I make anything that falls under the bracket of future sounds. I’m still not sure if that’s even a thing, but I try to make music that’s makes you feel something with a garage and house backdrop. Oh yeah, and I quite like a nice bassline too.

Manchester has always been known for it's diverse music scene. What is it about your city that inspires you to make the music you make and what makes it different from other cities or 'scenes' in your opinion?
Everyone knows everyone. Manchester’s the right size to have a really communal feel to it which opens up opportunities to collaborate and meet other producers. The diversity comes from each of us having different inspirations and aspirations but most importantly, it’s that we’re able to see each other and share the enthusiasm we have for the music we love which in itself inspires you to keep doing what you’re doing and just keep trying new things.

What's your favorite post party/clubbing midnight snack and where in Manchester can I get it?
Chicken wings from Pizza and Co definitely hit the spot. Its close enough to the city centre to walk and its right outside a 42 bus stop which is always certain to get you somewhere close to home.

Tell us more about BPM Music and what we can expect from you and your crew in the near future?
After a couple years of doing raves at some of Manchesters best venues, Phaze One, Dj Darka, T Dot and Madam X decided to set up the label to showcase some of the unsigned music we were playing in our raves. My EP Lucid Dreams, should be out by the summer and we should have another release before the end of the year from T Vicious – his beats aren’t like a great deal out and they drop incredibly well in any type of set. We’ll be taking over Just jam on Jun the 5th with all the label residents playing sets – should be a lot of fun so make sure you all tune in!

Mullet Mix 003: Vice City

Here it is! Mullet Mix #003 is out for your partying pleasure. This time we've got our friends from Vice City laying down a serious selection of body movers including their own unreleased track Fever. I've been listening to it all day and it pretty much sums up what we would consider 'dope' in February 2013.
Vice City is a collaborative project between DJ/Producers Subcoat and Stitcha and are currently taking over dancefloors as part of the Troupe family. We think 2013 is going to be major for these guys. Support them on facebook and get treated to exclusive downloads to their latest releases.
