Chance The Rapper - Acid Rap

 The Underachievers, Ak and Issa Dash, are the part of this fresh new wave of Hip-Hop that is coming out from New York. Indigoism is their first mixtape on FlyLo's label Brainfeeder. Knowing the previous releases from these two and just what FlyLo has to say about them, I am pretty sure that the mixtape wont dissapoint. Haleek Maul X Supreme Cuts - Chrome Lips

Two months ago, a Barbados based rapper released a dark underground mixtape called Oxyconteen; and the two tracks that really got my attention from it were produced by Supreme Cuts. Obviously I was excited when I heard that these artist would team up to make a 17 track mixtape. This is not your typical hip hop mixtape. Supreme Cuts are on point when it comes to making gloomy atmospheric beats and Haleek Maul's pessimistic and morbid lyrics just fit perfectly. It might not be for everyone but I suggest you give it a listen.

Joey BADA$$ - 1999

Here's something I've been listening to all week (as was the rest of the crew). '1999' is Joey BADA$$' debut mixtape that really took me back to what seemed like the golden era in rap music. This talented 17 year old rapper is real decent on the mic and has a knack for choosing dope beats to rap over: J Dilla (RIP), DOOM and Statik Selektah to name a few. While obviously very reminiscent of Stones Throw rap music from the turn of the new millennia (due to the selection of beats), he just makes it sound like he was there in a way that my mastery of the English language will fail to explain in coherent words. Remember this kid is 17. He was 11 when we lost Dilla. I therefore, urge you to give it a listen and see if you agree with me.

2012 Looks Promising

To those that check our blog from time to time I am sorry for not updating it a lot more during the holidays. During this break some of us were busy: Mirakle had two live performances over the Christmas Break, on top of that he teamed up with Left Boy to make a catchy track "Video Games"

Stewiwionda was djing b2b with Sofie at Pom de Grenade; Jakob aka Dj Philth and fshstk tried out their skills at djing on New Years. I on the other hand was too busy being lazy so I'll try to make it up to you by making a small list of some stuff I listened to in past few weeks. Clams Casino released a remastered 320kbps version of his mixtape "Instrumentals". This was one of my favorite mixtapes in 2011 so getting this in 320 meant I had this on repeat and still do. Make sure you download this you wont regret it. Then right after New Years I stumbled across Evian Christ. No one knows much about him except that he made some impressive tracks. MYD was Today's Track few days ago and if you liked it I suggest you listen to the rest of his tracks. 5 days later The Daily Street decided to get Ifan Dafydd on their mixtape series. 2012 couldn't have started any better.If you follow us on Facebook you probably heard of it, but if you haven't make sure you do: And just like that some of my favorite artists started releasing tracks: Jacques Green released "Clark" from his forthcoming EP - Concealer (Jan. 30th) Shlohmo released "wenn uu", one of the tracks that will be on his new 3 song EP - Vacation (Feb. 7th) and soon after he released a remix of "Lianne La Havas - Forget". Around a day ago two brothers that go under the name Disclosure droped their new track titled "Flow": Kidnap Kid aswell decided to show off some of his new stuff. Few hours ago he just released "Lazarus Taxon". Today, while checking out my mail I found out that Stones Throw was nice enough to give us a free download of Jonti's album Sine & Moon

The Summer Of George

As the end of summer is slowly creeping up, I decided to whip together some of the tuneage that has made this summer one for the record books. You will probably see a recurring theme throughout that was influenced by the acts that moved me the most this festival/summer season: Night Slugs Crew, Hudson Mohawke and Dorian Concept. This is probably a very accurate snapshot of what I was listening to from May to August 2011. INDIE RnB

I thought I'd share this really great compilation with you guys. As I currently ride the so-called post-dubstep (yes, it's a very dickheadish and pretentious name but it is the only real way to describe it) wave, there is no denying that one of its key-influences is RnB. The evolution of traditional RnB over the years has somehow culminated into the fusing of dubstep basslines with the romantic and sensual vocals of RnB we somehow magically end up at with what can be perceived as post-dubstep.

This compilation documents just that: the evolution and transformation to the distinctive RnB sub-genre we have today. This transformation has led to the rise of names that have achieved fame of late: The XX, James Blake, The Weeknd, Frank Ocean and Jamie Woon.

Soundtrack To My March

I've been mostly listening to Oddfuture and Mirakle during February, but toward the end of the month and the beginning of March, the typical "Sountrack to My" music(if you can call it that) started playing in my Itunes. It is pretty early in March but I'm pretty sure few of these songs will be on repeat quite a lot this month. Expect stuff from James Blake, Jamie xx and few new artists I've been listening to such as Koreless. Enjoy.

Mirakle - The First Wonder

As months turned into weeks and those long gruelling weeks into days of patiently waiting for Mirakle to finally drop his first mixtape, we are stoked and relieved to say that the wait is finally over. What was heavily talked about on several drunken nights with the kid himself, we wondered if it would ever really be completed. The kid came through.

If you are not yet a fanboy or groupie on his facebook page you are probably scratching your head in confusion. Let's take a step back. INTRO. Mirakle is a lyricist from Vienna, Austria who has taken some popularity on youtube through his rap videos he started posting over a year ago. His development in mastering verse, rhyme and rhythm has been astronomical within this short period of time. His videos provide enough evidence. But enough with the hot air and on to business.

Dubstep Is Dead

Just wanted to share this mix with you all. What caught my eye was the title of the mix as well as the description that came along with it:

"Dubstep is dead." I really could not think of a more ridiculous yet true statement to pronounce. At a time where the genre’s style is oozing into just about every facet of commercial music, it’s undeniable influence is permeating the ears of the unknowing, yet there is debate as to the future, and current state, of the most interesting and revolutionary genre in dance music since jungle. Not that long ago, the “dub” element of dubstep was prominent; echos and delays paid tribute to the old days of blowing marijuana smoke into a microphone, getting the music high and, by proxy, the listener. Enjoying the space in between sounds, the effects and vibes that dub lovers lusted were eventually found in most forms of electronic music, and the DJ/sound system culture provided the template for selectors to come. Nowadays, anything that is at or near 140 BPM and has sub bass is considered to be “dubstep” and rarely utilizes the same use of space, bass and place. Where snares and voices would echo and reverb, distorted synths stab, and heavy drums pound, leaving barely any room for the listener to think. This is, I believe, a reflection of our times. Immersed in over-stimulation from the various forms of media that used to entertain us and now imprison us, we are subjected to a barrage of frequencies that confuse and numb us. The only escape, for some of us, is music, and I believe that this is what holds us all together, as an international community and as friends, and regardless of the sounds being played, the sound will continue to grow, evolve and piss off more people that “just don’t like it” or get it. Until a few months pass, and they too, will go from hater, to supporter, to attempting to capitalize on it. This is mix is by no means the headstone on the tomb of our beloved dubstep music, but I chose the tracks that were used for very particular reasons – I want people to understand, embrace and love the different strands of music that have stemmed from dubstep, and to understand that it is simply a permutation of bass music.

I agree and disagree. I can relate to the sentiments that some of the elements of what dubstep used to be is now fading away. But I also see that without any progression and developments we wouldn't have even gotten to what is now known as dubstep. I think this sentiment has been more evident in the hip-hop scene where its fans have divided into various camps representing hip-hop's multiple styles and subgenres. This is all useless at the end of the day, so just sit back, chill, and enjoy the tunes.
