Daily Dope: OBEY THE GIANT

Sunday Streaming: "La Haine" (1995)

It's a pretty lazy Sunday. So there's nothing better to do than get a good movie in. We present you Matthieu Kassovitz's now legendary social drama "La Haine" that depicts the lives of three young friends living in the Banlieue's of Paris in the 1990's. This is also Vincent Cassel's big break. If you haven't seen this yet, you should definitely give it a go.

If you have a hour and a half during the week or the weekend I recommend watching this. Lorenzo Fonda filmed Blu while he traveled through South America and made it into a documentary about one great artist that I am a big fan of.

Outside In: Trailer

OUTSIDE IN is a celebratory and historical look at street art through the lens of the Museum of Contemporary Art's groundbreaking exhibition Art in the Streets. The film features renowned artists Shepard Fairey, Lee Quiñones, Swoon, Futura, Mister Cartoon, Revok, Martha Cooper, Invader to name a few. Director Alex Stapleton (Corman's World: Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel) documents the artist's creative process, their pitfalls with the law, the poetic impermanence of their craft and the artists' evolution from the back seat of a cop car to the walls of a well-respected institution.

Here's the latest from the RPM camp, pretty dope fanvid that got me pretty excited. To be honest, anything with Explosions In The Sky gets me excited.

Also, word is that producer Nottz is now set to be doing the soundtrack for the movie which is exciting news. If my memory serves me right he was last seen on an EP with Asher Roth: RAWTH EP. Which you can DOWNLOAD here.

Revolutions Per Minute

We here at afromullets are not ones to talk very much and barely have much to add to our posts as we are most probably suffering on some mild form of ADD.

I do hope you can take a few minutes out of your time and read this post. I have just gotten word of a very interesting film project currently in the making that might be of interest to you. The film is called 'Revolutions Per Minute' and tells the story of an upcoming rapper and his journey of finding his voice in the midst of the explosion of hip-hop in the 1990's and being thrown into unfamiliar world as he finds himself in streets of Paris.

Among those involved in the project is a young director, Tim Gregory out of Vienna, Austria who has recently completed his first feature film "Political Animals". He is also known for an award-winning short film called "The Strange Case of Salman abd al Haqq" which is one of the first to ever deal with the subject of CIA-sponsored torture. Tim has teamed up with the New York producer John Reefer whose most recent project "Kinyarwanda" was awarded the Audience Choice Award at the most recent Sundance Film Festival. Additionally I would like to add that the film was written by Tim himself alongside Mzwandile Sibanda (also out of Vienna), and is also going to be directing and editing the movie himself. This film project proves to be very promising through an interesting plot backed by a very talented director-producer team.

Aside from the riveting plot in itself, this project has the potential for a great soundtrack. There is just so much amazing music I can think of when trying to visualize the burgeoning hip-hop scene in the 90's.

I hope you stay tuned as we keep you posted with more details as this project gets under way. Maybe I'll be able to share all the familiar names out of the hip-hop world that are looking to get involved in this project (acting and producing) in my next update...

Exit Through The Gift Shop

This is by far one of the weirdest and intriguing films I've seen to date, with a comically, amazingly, grandiosely stupid story, but the one thing it does extremely well is putting street art in the spotlight. Keep in mind that it is very possible Banksy has allowed himself certain amounts of, shall we say, artistic license in the compilation of this film, but I do not mean this in any negative way. In true Banksy fashion, these 90 minutes are filled to the brim, and even overflowing, with copious barrages of irony. Nonetheless, absolutely stunning scenes of street art in process, both in studios and on the streets. The film, and of course the legendary Mr. Brainwash, really flips around the age old question of 'What is art?' and the value of art, in a way that has never been done before. So for those of you who haven't seen 'Exit Through The Gift Shop', sit back and enjoy. "Catfish" Trailer

Here is another movie set in the slowly blossoming 'social network' genre. But no need to write it off as that just yet. It starts of with guy meeting girl on facebook. Guy and girl get close. This moves on to telephone calls and meeting the girl's family through facebook as well. Eventually guy feels comfortable enough to give girl a surprise visit. And that's where it all goes wrong/creepy. This movie really looks like it's one to watch. It's been hailed as "the best Hitchcock film Hitchcock never directed" by the Financial Times. I don't know about you but I'm excited. Oh and by the way, it really happened?

Darren Arronofsky's Black Swan Trailer

Darren Arronofsky has surprised with every single of his four features particularly with Requiem for A Dream and The Wrestler. Black Swan so far is surrounded by too much mystery in the advertising campaign though, being described as a superrnatural-thriller set in the world of ballet. Resembling Splice's don't reveal all from the start trailer campaign the new trailer features the first glimpse of the super-natural part as Natalie Portman appears slightly transformed at the end of the trailer with red eyes and feathers floating around her. Is this Arronofsky going Croenenberg, Lynch or just Splice? Time and the new trailer will tell-maybe.

Pelican Blood trailer

Still without a UK release date, Pelican Blood was one of the revelations at the Edinburgh Film Festival. It proves that Brits can still do exciting films without mourning the state of council estates and without re-cycling Guy Ritchie's neo-cockney gangster films. The film is about bird-watching, suicide, that one chick (abundance of bird analogies-I know) that nearly destroys you, finding your way in life and how vegetarians are mental (my own personal conclusion). This is a cult classic in the making. Great soundtrack with music from Crystal Castles and the Do.

Ravenous Remake: Let Me In

THE ORIGINAL Let The Right One In THE RAVENOUS REMAKE Let Me In In this first installment of Ravenous Remake we recommend you see the Swedish Original before the Hollywood plastic epic remake ruins it for you or before friends come to you saying its the best thing they have ever seen after the 3d space smurf movie. It's the story of a kid who befriends the girl next door who turns out to be a vampire. The Swedish original is eerie, touching and broke new grounds in the sub-genre of vampire films, the film being much more than the usual gore and neck bite-fest vampire flicks usually are. The American one will make the snow-plough a fashion item, give Chloe Morritz a star-vehicle and pay off starving hardcore bands. Even the title change suggests that Hollywood wants YOU to chew your brains in the multiplex.

OZ Attacks!- Animal Kingdom Trailer

A series of Australian film are making a hell of a buzz this year, on the festival circuit as well as the film blog realm. If in the previous years there was a wave of spine-chillers from New Zeeland and Australia now film-makers from down-under have embraced a genre they haven't been renowned from: the crime-thriller. Animal Kingdom impressed at Cannes Film Market, was appreciated at Sundance and looks like it will get a fall release in the US. Plot: born in a family of criminals, the main character is forced to make a choice between being loyal to the family and go to prison or rat on his own brothers, with the promise of a crime-free life. The Darwinistic words of wisdom from Guy Pierce's character make me believe this a Scorsese-scale gem in the making. Weak point: the trailer has a touch of the cheesy through it's use of Air Supply's soap-fest 'All Out of Love' but hey, the world has run out of epic rock anthems to feature in trailers maybe.
